Play Ball!

Some people play sports.  Their fans watch enthusiastically.  Those who don’t play or watch tell jokes about sportsmen.  I enjoyed one in particular that I picked up from the Internet the other day:

Two businessmen, out playing golf, found themselves behind two women on the golf course.  The women managed to play into practically every sand trap, water hole and rough on the links, making the men wait behind them.  As they didn’t follow the normal golf etiquette of inviting the men to play through, one of the businessmen offered to walk ahead and ask if they could play through.

He walked half way down the fairway, turned around and returned, saying to his colleague, “One of them was my wife and the other my mistress”!

Hearing this, his colleague offered to go and ask the ladies if they could play through.  When he got half way down the fairway, he stopped and came back.

All he could say was, “Small world”!

Golf fans and followers of other sports can find many Internet sites devoted to the games.  For the latest sports news, a number of Web sites offer scores, standings, articles, commentaries and predictions.  Some even have audio or video coverage.

Sportsnetwork has daily news on NFL results, Golf Tournaments, NBA scores, College Football, NHL and Baseball coverage.

ESPN Network not only provides headline sports news, game results and sports articles, but has direct links to sites like NFL and NFA as well as to sites covering matches. ESPN also reports on tennis and soccer matches. The soccer page features all of the league standings, recent game scores and leading scorers in each of the divisions.

The NFL website has all the latest National Football League (USA) news, scores and statistics for the American football fan. It also has a page for each of the teams in the National and American Leagues.

Providing the same kind of comprehensive coverage for the avid basketball fan is the NBA website.  They also offer continuous wire service news, a live scoreboard and video clips.

There’s also a website for The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.  In addition to the announcements of scheduled cup series, they have a link to the NASCAR fan club.

Other than ESPN, network coverage online can be found at several of the major TV network sites. ABC, which is a bit slow loading, provides a continuous news update.

CNN covers both US and World sports news.   One of CNN’s attractive features is the live video coverage of late-breaking sports news.  As they say at their Web site, “If the big sports news conference is about to start and you find yourself stuck in front of your computer with not a television in sight, don't worry because CNN/SI delivers the video directly to your terminal!”

CNN/SI also carries articles from the leading magazine Sports Illustrated, including the ever famous “swimsuit” issues.

Soccernet has particularly good coverage of European soccer, complete with club and player profiles, daily news flashes, results, and live scoreboards with continuous daily updates. Those who want to check previous performance can get to the last four years' results with a mouse click.

One of the interesting things about most of the Internet sports sites is that they generally have broad coverage of all sports.  In the final analysis, sports fans probably choose their Web sites simply on the basis of their likes or dislikes of page design rather than the amount of news coverage provided.

Whatever your favorite sport, you'll find plenty of coverage on the Internet.  Not only is sports coverage broad, the World Wide Wed sites devoted to sports are among the most up-to-date on the Net, from late-breaking news to game, team and league standings.  The articles are current, the player information thorough and the audio and video coverage lively.
